Fireplace Safety for the Holidays

As the weather approaches frightful, time in front of the fire certainly sounds delightful, and so do parties and decorations and small gatherings with friends. No holiday celebration is complete without a crackling flame, but please make sure you pay attention to fireplace safety at this time of year. Make your Pinterest-worthy mantle beautiful and safe!

At HearthCabinet Ventless Fireplaces, safety is a top priority, and the unique, patented safety and design features of our ventless fireplaces eliminate so many of the concerns that come with wood-burning and gas fireplaces.

But no matter which type of fireplace you use, we want to help you plan for the merriest, brightest, and safest gatherings. Read on for the tips and resources we’ve gathered for you for all fireplace types!

Chat with friends and family.

Let your guests know about your fireplace, and ensure that everyone is aware that the glass, screen, frames, and mantle of the fireplace can be quite hot, and remain so, even if the fire is off. Take a look at the safety recommendations from The Hearth, Patio, and Barbecue Association for their continued thoughts.

Deck the halls and place your menorah with care.

Our homes are more decorated (and crowded) than ever during the holiday season, so it’s extra-important that we’re mindful of safety with all of those candles and boughs of holly around. No matter which sort of fireplace you use, ensure that your holiday decorations are kept at a safe distance from your fireplace.

If you don’t own a HearthCabinet Ventless Fireplace, which all have a rigid mesh screen door and keyed lock to prevent accidental contact with the flame, then make sure you have installed a screen in front of your gas or wood-burning fireplace to prevent sparks and embers from flying, to stop any objects from getting into the fire, and to provide a barrier between the flame and the room.

Don’t actually roast chestnuts on an open fire.

No matter how much you love classic holiday songs, they aren’t fireplace safety experts. Though flames are inviting and toasted marshmallows enticing, sticking food (or anything) in the fireplace is never a good idea.

Be sure to make your friends and relatives aware that you have a strict no food (or anything) in the fireplace rule.

Build smart fires, and maintain your fireplace.

If you use a wood-burning fireplace, acquaint yourself with best practices from reputable sources, like The Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA). Their tips for burning wood are important to keep in mind, as are the chimney safety tips from The Hearth, Patio, and Barbecue Association.

One highlight from their list of recommendations is that you use dry, seasoned firewood that is at least 6 months - 1 year old. Don’t use wrapping paper, cardboard boxes, or your old Christmas tree as fuel, no matter how tempting it may be. This goes for that awful sweater your Great Aunt Sally gave you, too. These materials can cause flames to flare up and can create toxic smoke.

Speaking of flare up, chimneys can go from functional to flammable over time due to the buildup of creosote and other obstructions. To avoid carbon monoxide poisoning and reduce the risk of fires with your wood-burning or gas fireplace, the CSIA recommends that everyone have an annual chimney check. It’s also important to note that gas fireplaces also deposit corrosive substances in your chimney, like creosote. Read up on what the CSIA thinks you need to know about your gas fireplace.

The benefits of HearthCabinet Ventless Fireplaces.

We believe that fireplaces should be safe, which is why we’ve developed unique, innovative features to bring you luxury products you can trust.

First, all of our fireboxes are equipped with a rigid mesh screen door with a keyed lock. The door prevents any inadvertent contact with flames, and the lock offers you even greater peace of mind. Best of all, the mesh screen doesn’t detract from your enjoyment of the dancing flames.

Next, our fireplaces use clean-burning alcohol gel cartridges. Each cartridge is single-use and comes pre-filled with a precise and carefully limited supply of alcohol gel, so no one ever has to undergo the potential dangers of pouring fuel. The cartridges are very easy to place and light, and there is no ash or clean-up required. Finally, the alcohol gel burns clean -- there is negligible emission, which is why you don’t need a vent in a properly sized and habitable room!

We’ll say that again: You don’t need any venting - no flue, no chimney - to operate your HearthCabinet Ventless Fireplace. Just make sure that the room is big enough (generally 10’ x 12’ x 8’), and that there is a fresh air supply to the room. Not only does this mean that you can enjoy a fireplace virtually anywhere, but it also frees you from the stress, ash pit, and expense of cleaning and maintaining a safe, functioning chimney.
